The Prime Minister of India plans to visit the Vivekananda Rock Memorial in Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu, for a 48-hour meditation session.

About the Vivekananda Rock Memorial:

  1. Location: The memorial is located on a small island off the coast of Kanyakumari.
  2. Surroundings: The memorial stands on one of 2 rocks situated approximately 500 metres off the mainland of Vavathurai, surrounded by the Laccadive Sea, where the Bay of Bengal, the Indian Ocean, and the Arabian Sea converge.
  3. Significance: This monument was built in 1970 to honour Swami Vivekananda, a Hindu monk and spiritual leader who is believed to have attained enlightenment on this very rock.
  4. Components: The memorial comprises 2 main structures: the 'Shripada Mandapam' and the 'Vivekananda Mandapam'
  5. Statue: A life-sized bronze statue of Swami Vivekananda is also located on the premises.
  6. Memorial Contributions: Several state governments and the Central Government of India contributed to the construction of this memorial.

Swami Vivekananda: A Spiritual Leader and Reformer

  1. Birth and Early Life: Swami Vivekananda, born Narendranath Datta in 1863, was a prominent Hindu monk and one of India's most celebrated spiritual leaders.

  2. Disciple and Spokesperson: He was a devoted disciple of Sri Ramakrishna Paramhamsa and a  world spokesperson for Vedanta philosophy.

  3. Spiritual Attainments: Swami Vivekananda was hailed as a Dhyana Sidha, a meditation expert, by his guru, Ramakrishna Paramhamsa.

  4. Synthesis of Spirituality and Materialism: His aim was to reconcile Indian spirituality with Western material progress, believing that these 2 elements could coexist and complement each other.

  5. Service to Others: He advocated for self-purification through helping others. He encouraged selfless service and working towards the betterment of society.
  6. Teachings and Paths to Realisation: Through his teachings on the 4 yogas, the harmony of religions, the divinity of the soul, and serving humanity as God, Vivekananda offered spiritual aspirants paths to self-realisation.
  7. World's Parliament of Religions: Vivekananda represented Hinduism at the 1893 World's Parliament of Religions held in Chicago.
  8. Ramakrishna Order: After his 1st visit to the West, Swami Vivekananda founded the Ramakrishna Order in Belur, outside Kolkata, in 1897.

  2. It is one of the 6 orthodox systems (darshans) of Indian philosophy.
