SUPREME COURT BANS TIGER SAFARI IN CORE AREAS OF JIM CORBETT NATIONAL PARK

  2. This aimed at protecting wildlife and preserving natural habitats.

 

Jim Corbett National Park

Jim Corbett National Park is a part of the largest Corbett Tiger Reserve; Project Tiger is located in Nainital district of Uttarakhand. The majestic landscape of Corbett is famous for its tiger richness. Established as Hailey National Park in the year 1936, Corbett has the distinction of being the oldest and most prestigious national park of India. It is also being honored as the place where Project Tiger was first launched in the year 1973. This unique tiger reserve is known as the one that gave birth to Project Tiger in India to protect the most endangered species and the royal wild animal of India Called Tigers.

 Committee Formation:

  1. Formed to check feasibility of tiger safaris in buffer zones nationwide.
  2. Committee has been given the task of proposing measures to mitigate environmental damage and seek compensation for violations.

Biosphere reserves are traditionally organized into 3 interrelated zones, known as a core zone, a buffer zone and a transition zone or 'zone of cooperation'.

 

Petition and Court’s Response:

  1. Environment activist Filed a petition against Uttarakhand government's plans for tiger safari and zoo.
  2. Court Strongly criticized the authorities for illegal construction and felling of trees. It emphasized  the need for wildlife conservation.

 Status Report:

  1. Court seeks status report on illegal activities within the Corbett Tiger Reserve within 3 months.
