Supersolid: A New State of Light Observed

Supersolid: A New State of Light Observed

18-03-2025
  1. Scientists have successfully turned light into a supersolid for the first time in history.
  2. Earlier, supersolidity had only been observed in Bose-Einstein Condensates (BECs).

What is a Supersolid?

  1. A rare state of matter that exhibits properties of both:
    1. Solid-like structure (orderly and crystalline)
    2. Frictionless flow (like a superfluid with no viscosity)

Scientific Insights:

  1. BEC (Bose-Einstein Condensate): Formed when bosons are cooled near absolute zero, causing them to occupy the same quantum state.
  2. Supersolids require extremely low temperatures near absolute zero.

Applications:

  1. Quantum computing
  2. Superconductors
  3. Frictionless lubricants
