The Ministry of Women and Child Development is implementing the "Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0" during the 15th Finance Commission period 202l-22 to 2025-26.

About The Scheme:

  1. Background: The Anganwadi Services, previously known as Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) since 1975, are now part of Mission Saksham Anganwadi & Poshan 2.0. Mission Poshan 2.0 integrates nutrition support to tackle malnutrition among children, adolescent girls, pregnant, and lactating women.
  2. Focus: The scheme aims to enhance nutrition content and delivery. It promotes practices that boost health, wellness, and immunity through a coordinated approach.

Objectives:

  1. Human Capital Development: Improve the country's future workforce by addressing malnutrition.
  2. Tackle Malnutrition: Reduce and prevent nutrition-related issues.
  3. Promote Awareness: Encourage good eating habits for lasting health.
  4. Address Deficiencies: Implement key strategies to fix nutrition-related problems.

Scheme Components:

  1. Nutrition Support: Supplementary Nutrition Programme (SNP): For children (6 months to 6 years), pregnant women, lactating mothers, and adolescent girls (14-18 years) in specific regions.
  2. Early Childhood Care: Education and Stimulation: For children aged 3-6 years and early stimulation for those 0-3 years.
  3. Infrastructure Improvement: Modern Anganwadis: Upgrade facilities to enhance service delivery.
  4. Poshan Abhiyaan: Focused on integrated nutrition support and improved outcomes.

Significance of the scheme:

  1. Saksham Anganwadi: Enhances Anganwadi services by integrating improved infrastructure, technology, and training. This initiative aims to increase nutritional outcomes and early childhood education, impacting over 1.5 million Anganwadis (ICDS data, 2022).
  2. POSHAN 2.0: Strengthens the POSHAN Abhiyan by focusing on holistic nutrition for children, adolescents, and pregnant women. Targets reducing stunting and malnutrition by 2% annually, leveraging data from NITI Aayog’s 2023 report.
  3. Umbrella ICDS: Consolidates Anganwadi Services, POSHAN Abhiyan, and the Scheme for Adolescent Girls to streamline and enhance nutritional support. Aims to cover over 20 crore beneficiaries across India (Ministry of Women and Child Development, 2024).
  4. Anganwadi Services: Provides comprehensive early childhood care and education, focusing on nutrition and health for children under 6. Aims to reach over 10 crore children, improving developmental outcomes (ICDS, 2023).
  5. Scheme for Adolescent Girls: Targets 10-19-year-old girls to improve their nutritional status, education, and health. Expected to benefit 1.5 million girls annually, addressing critical gaps in adolescent health (NITI Aayog, 2023).
