Why in News?

Recently, Researchers at JNCASR Bengaluru have developed an innovative paint using radiative cooling, an autonomous institute of the Department of Science and Technology.

  • The new, cost-effective, and eco-friendly radiative cooling technology is a promising solution for sustainable cooling in response to rising global temperatures.

Radiative Cooling Technology

  1. About:

  • Radiative cooling technology is a method that uses thermal radiation to dissipate heat from an object, thereby causing it to become cooler.
  • The atmospheric transmission window (8-13 µm) emits thermal radiation directly into the extremely cold universe, creating cool surfaces.
  • This process is noteworthy as it operates without any dependence on electricity.

  1. Need:

  • The rise in global warming and urban heat island effects has emphasized the need for efficient cooling technologies.
  • Conventional active cooling devices like air-conditioners, fans, and refrigerators require significant electrical energy, leading to greenhouse gas emissions and elevated surface temperatures.
  • Radiative cooling technology tackles energy-intensive tasks by emitting thermal radiation through the atmospheric transmission window without requiring electricity.

  1. Radiative Cooling Paint:

  • The material is derived from a new magnesium oxide-polyvinylidene fluoride nanocomposite, made from earth-abundant, cost-effective, non-toxic, and non-harmful materials.
  • The device exhibits exceptional cooling capabilities due to its high solar reflectivity and infrared thermal emissivity.
  • The MgO-PVDF composite, containing dielectric nanoparticles, demonstrated high solar reflectance (96.3%) and exceptional thermal emission (98.5%).
  • This paint effectively reduces electricity usage and provides essential cooling during hot summer days by counteracting the increasing heat impact on buildings.
  • The paint boasts exceptional optical properties that significantly reduce surface temperatures by approximately 10°C in strong sunlight, surpassing the performance of standard white paints.
  • The product's water-resistant, hydrophobic properties enable easy application on various surfaces, ensuring consistent coverage and strong adhesion.
