The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has signed a contract for the procurement of the Nag Missile System (NAMIS) under the Buy (Indian – Indigenously Designed, Developed, and Manufactured) category.
What is NAMIS?
The Nag Missile System (NAMIS) is a highly advanced anti-tank guided missile (ATGM) system, designed to enhance the Indian Armed Forces' capability to neutralize enemy tanks with precision.
1. Development and Design
- NAMIS has been developed by the Defence Research & Development Laboratory (DRDL), a key establishment under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
- DRDO functions as the research and development (R&D) arm of the Ministry of Defence, playing a pivotal role in India's defence modernization.
2. Key Features
- Fire-and-Forget Capability: The Nag missile uses an advanced imaging infrared (IIR) seeker, allowing it to lock onto a target and destroy it autonomously after launch.
- Highly Sophisticated Targeting System: Equipped with advanced sighting mechanisms, it ensures high accuracy in battlefield conditions.
- Anti-Tank Role: NAMIS is specifically designed to counter heavily armored enemy tanks, making it a crucial asset for ground forces.
