Kerala First State to Establish a Senior Citizens Commission

Kerala has become the first state in India to pass the Kerala State Senior Citizens Commission Bill, paving the way for the formation of a dedicated commission for the welfare and rights of senior citizens.

Kerala’s Aging Demographic

  1. As per Kerala’s State Planning Board, in 2015, people aged 60 years and above constituted 13.1% of the state's population.
  2. This figure was significantly higher than the national average of 8.3%, highlighting the need for targeted policies to support the elderly.

About the Commission for Senior Citizens

1. Objective

  1. The commission aims to protect the rights, welfare, and social security of senior citizens.
  2. It seeks to instill confidence and dignity among the elderly by ensuring their concerns are addressed effectively.

2. Composition

  1. The commission will be headed by a Chairperson.
  2. It will have a minimum of three members, all of whom must be senior citizens themselves, ensuring direct representation of elderly voices in policymaking.
