IIT Mandi Researchers Study Environmental Impact of Solar Cells

22-07-2024

Researchers at IIT Mandi have conducted a study to assess the environmental impact of different solar cell technologies in India. They found that Cadmium Telluride (CdTe) technology has the lowest carbon dioxide emissions, ozone depletion potential, human health effects, and particulate air pollution.

Background:

  1. Solar energy in India: India has been promoting solar energy to meet its clean energy goals, but the production of solar cells has an environmental impact.
  2. Life-cycle assessment: The researchers conducted a life-cycle assessment (LCA) of five solar cell technologies to identify the most sustainable options.

Findings:

  1. CdTe technology: CdTe technology has the lowest environmental impact among the five technologies studied.
  2. Lowest carbon dioxide emissions: CdTe technology has the lowest carbon dioxide emissions, ozone depletion potential, human health effects, and particulate air pollution.
  3. CIGS technology: CIGS (Copper Indium Gallium Selenide) technology was the second most sustainable option.
  4. Other technologies: The other three technologies studied were mono-silicon, polysilicon, and Passivated Emitter & Rear Contact (PERC).

Significance:

  1. Sustainable solar energy: The study provides insights into the environmental impact of different solar cell technologies and can help policymakers promote sustainable options.
  2. Low-carbon economy: The findings can contribute to the development of a low-carbon economy and reduce the environmental impact of solar energy production.
  3. India's clean energy goals: The study can help India achieve its clean energy goals and meet its commitments under the Paris Agreement.

About Cadmium Telluride:

  1. Material: CdTe is a material made from the combination of Cadmium and Tellurium.
  2. Properties: It is an odorless and black crystalline solid that is insoluble in water.
  3. Applications: CdTe is used in thin film solar cells and has potential applications in room temperature semiconductor detectors.

What is a photovoltaic (PV) cell?

  1. Definition: A PV cell is a nonmechanical device that converts sunlight directly into electricity.
  2. Function: PV cells convert sunlight into electricity by converting photons into electrical energy.

Limitations:

  1. Life-cycle assessment: The study only examined a portion of the solar technology life cycle, excluding the recycling and end-of-life phases.
  2. Future research: The researchers plan to investigate the recycling and end-of-life phases in future research.
