On 6 October, 2023 India Meteorological Department (IMD) and Christ University, Pune, sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on climate research.

Key Facts

  1. This new five-year partnership is being executed under the capacity building programme, one of the main goals of the proposed National Framework for Climate Services (NFCS).
  2. The scope of this MoU extends to human resource training and development, research and publications in climate science, exchange of knowledge and expertise to train college students and various efforts to mitigate climate change.
  1. Notably, in 2018, the IMD had installed an Automatic Weather Station (AWS) on the campus.
  2. Since then, rainfall, temperature and other vital weather parameters of the neighbouring areas covering more than 18 villages are being recorded.
  1. About NFCS

  1. NFCS -India is proposed under Global Framework for Climate Services (GFCS).
  1. Switzerland, China, Germany and UK have also launched the NFCS.
  1. It is premised on strengthening the production, availability, delivery and application of science-based climate monitoring and prediction services (refer to infographics).
  2. Nodal agency for formulation and implementation of the national framework in India will be IMD.

  1. To identify agricultural production, health trends, population distribution in high-risk areas, road and infrastructure mapping, etc.
  2. To prepare for new climate conditions and adapt to their impacts on water supplies, extreme events, etc
  1. About GFCS
  1. It was launched at World Climate Conference-3 in 2009 and coordinated by World Meteorological Organization (WMO).
  2. It is a global partnership of governments (India is a founding Member) and organisations.
  3. It aims to help all climate services stakeholders to work together to achieve a climate-smart society.
