  • The PM emphasized that for the normalization of the India-China relationship, maintaining the peace and respecting the LAC are crucial.
  •  In order to disengage troops and lower tensions along the LAC, India and China have decided to scale up their efforts.
  • At Depsang-Demchok, India wishes to see the first disengagement.
  • About LAC:
  • There is no mutually agreed LAC.
  •  The three regions of LAC are Western, Middle, and Eastern.
  • The Johnson Line, which the British suggested in the 1860s, is the subject of the boundary dispute in the Western Sector (Ladakh).
  • The conflict is limited in the Middle Sector (Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand).
  • The McMahon Line (in Arunachal Pradesh), established in 1914, crosses the disputed border in the Eastern Sector (Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim).
  • Agreements signed to address disputes arising over LAC:
  • 1993 Agreement on Maintenance of Peace and Tranquility.
  • 1996 Agreement on Confidence-Building Measures in the Military Field.
  • 2005 Protocol on Modalities for Implementation of Confidence-Building Measures in Military Field.
  • 2012 Agreement on Establishment of a Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on India-China Border Affairs.
  • 2013 Border Defense cooperation agreement.
