BrahMos Aerospace Integration and Testing Facility

BrahMos Aerospace Integration and Testing Facility

13-05-2025
  1. Recently, the Defence Minister of India inaugurated the BrahMos Aerospace Integration and Testing Facility in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.
  2. It is a major step to achieve self-reliance in defence manufacturing.
  3. It was inaugurated on National Technology Day.
  4. National Technology Day 2025 was celebrated on 11th May 2025.
    1. The theme is 'YANTRA: A New Era for Advancing Technology, Research, and Progress'.
  5. BrahMos Missile System:
    1. BrahMos is named after two rivers: the Brahmaputra in India and the Moskva in Russia.
    2. The BrahMos missile is one of the world’s fastest supersonic cruise missiles.
    3. Cruise missiles are described as unmanned, self-propelled guided vehicles that remain airborne by generating aerodynamic lift for the majority of their flight.
    4. Cruise missiles are:
      1. Unmanned (no pilot inside).
      2. Self-propelled (they move on their own).
      3. Guided (directed toward a target).
      4. They stay in the air by using aerodynamic lift (like an airplane) for most of their flight.
      5. Their main job is to deliver a bomb or special payload to a target.

    1. It is co-developed by India and Russia.
    2. It is considered as a symbol of strategic deterrence, military strength, and national pride.
    3. BrahMos is a two-stage missile system.
    4. First Stage: The first stage is a solid propellant booster engine.
      1. A solid propellant booster engine is a type of rocket engine that uses solid fuel (propellant) to produce thrust.
      2. Solid propellant consists of a mixture of fuel and oxidizer that is cast or packed into a solid form.
      3. The first stage brings it to supersonic speed and then gets separated.
    5. Second Stage: The second stage is liquid ramjet stage.
      1. A liquid ramjet stage refers to a propulsion stage in a missile or aerospace vehicle that uses a ramjet engine powered by liquid fuel.
      1. It takes the missile closer to 3 Mach speed in cruise phase.
    1. It has stealth technology and guidance system with advanced embedded software that provides the missile with special features.
    2. The missile has a flight range of up to 290-km with supersonic speed.
    3. It operates on ‘Fire and Forget Principle’ adopting varieties of fights on its way to the target.
    4. It is able to carry a conventional warhead that weighs between 200 - 300 kilograms (Kg).
    5. It is a missile that can be launched from land, air, or sea, making it very versatile.
    6. Compared to other modern subsonic cruise missiles, BRAHMOS is:
      1. 3 times faster,
      1. 2.5 to 3 times longer in range,
      2. 3 to 4 times better at finding its target,
      3. 9 times more powerful in impact (Kinetic Energy).
