'Havisure': India's 1st ‘Hepatitis A’ Vaccine

Context

  1. Indian Immunologicals Ltd (IIL), a subsidiary (subordinate company) of the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), introduces India’s first indigenously developed Hepatitis A vaccine called ‘Havisure’.
  1. The vaccine plays a crucial role in preventing Hepatitis A, a highly contagious liver infection transmitted through contaminated food or water.
  2. Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver causing a range of health problems and can be fatal (can cause death).

Key Details:

  1. Havisure is a two-dose vaccine, with the first dose administered (given) at or above 12 months of age, followed by the second dose at least 6 months after the first.

  2. Recommended for individuals at risk of exposure to Hepatitis A or those planning to travel to regions with high Hepatitis A prevalence.

  3. Currently, Hepatitis A vaccines are imported into India and with its launch import dependency will reduce.

Hepatitis Prevention Initiatives

  1. National Viral Hepatitis Control Program 2019: A national program with the aim of eliminating Hepatitis C in India by 2030.

  2. Mission Indradhanush 2014: Provides vaccination against Hepatitis B along with seven other infections. It contributes to the broader spectrum of immunization efforts.
