Recently, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) released a report titled “Leveraging Artificial Intelligence and Big Data in the Telecom Sector” on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Big Data in the telecom sector.
Key Points of the Report
- Background of the Report: Emerging technologies such as AI and Big Data are transforming the world in multidimensional ways at a very fast speed. The future will see that human life will be largely impacted by AI. Recent advancements in AI will enable machines to learn and make decisions in ways that will enable them to perform tasks previously thought to rely on human experience, creativity, and ingenuity.

Key Recommendations:
- To adopt a regulatory framework applicable across sectors for ensuring the development of responsible Artificial Intelligence (AI) in India
- To establish an independent statutory authority titled “Artificial Intelligence and Data Authority of India (AIDAI)”
- Establishment of a Multi-Stakeholder Body (MSB) which will act as an advisory body to the proposed statutory authority AIDAI.
- Categorisation of AI uses cases on the basis of their risk and regulates them in accordance with the principle of Responsible AI.
Opportunities for AI and Big Data in Telecom Sector
- It has the potential to improve efficiency, productivity, and automation.
- Application of AI and Big Data will enhance network speed, capacity and latency by providing actionable insights.
- It will offer intelligent automated systems in designing, deploying, maintaining and managing network complexities including proactively securing the network.
Constraints
- Policy and regulatory challenges due to the absence of a Data Protection Bill in India.
- Limited AI expertise and knowledge, access to quality data and AI-specific infrastructure.
- Limited access to data, inadequate computing infrastructure, and limited R&D efforts.
- Interoperability and compatibility among different AI systems and data sources.
- Lack of industry-wide standards hampers the exchange of information.
