The Government of India (GoI) has taken adequate measures to improve pulses cultivation by regularly increasing the minimum support price.

Pulses Production in India

  1. India is the largest producer, consumer and importer of pulses in the world.
  2. In India, most pulses are grown in the Rabi season (60%) and the rest in the Kharif and Zaid seasons.
  3. States of MP, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh are the major producing states.
  4. 20% of the area of all food grains in India is devoted to pulses.
  5. The most amount of pulse produced is Gram.
  6. Government initiatives like MSP and the National Food Security Mission have increased pulse production by 60% from 2014 to 2024.

Self-sufficiency by 2027

  1. Consistent efforts are being made to attain self-sufficiency in pulses by 2027
  2. Domestic pulses production has increased from 17 million tonnes in 2014 and now a target of 29.5 million tonnes has been set for 2024.
  3. India at the Global Pulse Confederation (GPC) said that India has become self-reliant in chickpeas (chana).
  4. The government has increased the supply of new varieties of seeds to address the deficiency in black gram.
  5. A portal has been launched where farmers can sell their entire produce at an MSP.

Significance of Pulses Production in India

  1. Pulses are packed with protein, fibre, vitamins, and minerals, offering crucial nutrients for human health.
  2. Pulses enrich the soil by fixing nitrogen, enhancing fertility, and reducing reliance on synthetic fertilizers.
  3. Being drought-tolerant and having a low carbon footprint, pulses contribute to sustainable agriculture.
  4. Incorporating pulses into crop rotations improves soil structure, prevents disease cycles, and helps control weeds, fostering healthier farming practices.
