  • On 7 September, 2023 West Bengal legislative assembly passed a resolution declaring ‘Poila Baisakh’ as ‘Bangla Dibas’ or West Bengal Foundation Day.
  • Along with this, assembly also passed a proposal of making Rabindranath Tagore’s ‘Banglar Mati Banglar Jol’ (Bengal’s soil and Bengal’s water) the official song of State.

Background

  • Earlier In 2023, when Raj Bhavan officially declared 20 June as the State Foundation Day, there was a dispute over West Bengal's Foundation Day.
  • Noteworthy, On 20 June 1947 the Bengal Legislative Assembly held a meeting to decide if the Bengal Presidency would stay with India or Pakistan, or be divided.
  • As a result, the decision was made to divide Bengal into west Bengal and East Pakistan (which later became Bangladesh) and the Radcliffe Line was drawn later to mark the boundary
  • On 29 August, 2023 Ms. Banerjee had called for an all-party meeting and bought resolution to discuss which day should be observed as the State’s Foundation Day.
  • This resolution was brought under the Rule 169 of the rules of procedure of the conduct of the business in the House.
