Recently, the excellence and achievements of many educational institutions in India have been released by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) Ranking 2023. Among the top institutions, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras ranked number one in the overall ranking for the fifth consecutive year. On the other hand, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru was ranked as the best university.
Concept of NIRF
- It is a framework consisting of methodology for preparing the rank of all educational institutions across the country based on various parameters. On 29th September 2015, NIRF was launched and approved by the Ministry of Education (Erstwhile Ministry of Human Resource Development).
- This is the first-ever effort of the Government of India for preparing the ranking of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in the country.
- Parameters for NIRF Ranking: Depending on the category of the institution, the weightage for each parameter varies.
Main Points of NIRF Ranking 2023
- Areas of Ranking: For the year 2023, the ranking exercise includes the practice of providing a common “Overall” rank and a separate rank for Research Institutions, Universities, Degree Colleges, and discipline-specific ranks in Management, Pharmacy, Engineering, Law, Medical, Dental, and Architecture & Planning.
- Three Distinct Additions
- In this edition, efforts have been made to introduce new subjects namely Agriculture & Allied Sectors.
- It expanded the scope of “Architecture” to “Architecture and Planning” for comprising institutions imparting courses on Urban and Town Planning.
- For reducing the burden on institutions of providing similar data to two different agencies, efforts have been made to integrate the “Innovation” in ranking that was implemented by the Atal Ranking of Institutions on Innovation Achievements (ARIIA) into the India Rankings previously.
Participants: There has been an increase in number of participants in this year. The number of Higher Educational Institutes which participated in the ranking exercise in various categories and subject domains. It has enhanced from 3565 in 2016 to 8686 in 2023 in the case of the number of categories and subject domains it increased from 4 in 2016 to 13 in 2023.
Major Top Rankings:
- Top Law Institutes: In the field of law, the first, second, and third rank was achieved by The National Law School of India University, Bengaluru, National Law University, Delhi, and NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad respectively.
- Top Pharmacy Institutes: In this domain, Jamia Hamdard and BITS Pilani secured the second position after the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research, Hyderabad which secured the top rank.
- Top Colleges: Five colleges of Delhi University secured ranks in the top 10 colleges in India Miranda House was on the top position and Hindu College secured second place.
- Leading Engineering Institutions: Among engineering institutions, IIT-Madras dominated all engineering institutions in India by securing the top position for an eighth consecutive year. While IIT-Delhi and IIT-Bombay achieved the second and third positions, respectively.
- Top Management Institutes: In the field of management, the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad secured the top position in India that was followed by IIM Bangalore and IIM Kozhikode.
