Latest Context
Recently, the ‘Functioning of major ports in the country’ report was presented by the parliamentary standing committee on transport, tourism and culture.
Challenges Highlighted
- Only 8% of all investments over the past five years have been made under the PPP model.
- The Major Ports' average capacity utilisation is 49%, and several of them are running substantially below this average.
- The lack of road and rail access to the hinterland to meet growing needs is related to the low-capacity utilisation of the ports.

Recommendations

- A world-class Turn Around time of 24 hours for containers has only been attained by the JNPA. Logistics skills training under the National Skill Development Corporation.
- Ports may implement dual-cycle cranes and automated guided vehicles (AGVs) to ensure increased production.
- Without further delay, put the programme for automation and digitalization into action.
- The major ports should adopt the landlord port model.
