01-04-2024

The cVIGIL app of the Election Commission of India (ECI) has become a valuable tool for citizens to prevent violations of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) during the ongoing General Elections 2024. Since the announcement of the elections, more than 79,000 complaints have been received through the app.

Key Points:

  1. Over 99% of complaints have been resolved, with close to 89% resolved within 100 minutes.
  2. More than 58,500 complaints (73% of the total) are against illegal hoardings and banners.
  3. More than 1400 complaints were received related to distribution of money, gifts and liquor.
  4. About 3% of complaints (2454) are related to defacement of property.
  5. Out of the 535 complaints received for display of firearms and intimidation, 529 have already been resolved.
  6. 1000 complaints reported were for campaigning beyond the prohibited period, including use of speakers beyond permitted time.

Significance:

  1. The cVigil app is a significant leap towards election monitoring and reducing campaign chaos.
  2. This enables citizens to report violations of the Election Code faster and easier, without visiting the Returning Officer's office.
  3. The app's features, such as real-time audio, photo, and video capture, geo-tagging, and anonymous reporting, contribute to its success.

Q1) What is Geotagging?

This is the process of adding geographic coordinates to media based on the location of the mobile device. Geotags can be applied to photos, videos, websites, text messages, and QR codes, and can also include timestamps or other relevant information.

Conclusion:

The cVigil app exemplifies ECI's commitment to leveraging digital technology to ensure free, fair and inducement-free elections. Its effectiveness in addressing violations of the election code underscores the importance of citizen participation in maintaining electoral integrity.
