Why in News?

IIT Bombay's The National Centre of Excellence in Carbon Capture and Utilization (NCoE-CCU) has developed a novel technology for converting carbon dioxide into carbon monoxide.

  • The technology, which is energy-efficient and suitable for the steel sector, aligns with India's goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070.

Mechanism of CO2 to CO Conversion Technology

  1. Method:
  • The CO2 to CO conversion technology utilizes an electrocatalytic process.
  • This process, unlike traditional methods that require high temperatures and hydrogen, can operate at ambient temperatures with water, eliminating the need for high-temperature conditions.
  • This electrocatalysis reaction is highly energy-efficient, environmentally friendly, and sustainable, as it can be powered directly from renewable sources like solar panels or windmills

  • CO is a crucial chemical in the steel industry, utilized in blast furnaces to convert iron ores into metallic iron.
  • CO, particularly syn gas, is a widely utilized chemical in the industry.
  • CO2 emissions are typically generated through the partial oxidation of coke/coal.
