Latest Context

Recently, an X-class solar flare caused radio blackouts in certain US and Pacific Ocean regions.

Classification of Solar Flares

  • Depending on their strength, they are divided into several categories. A-class is the smallest class, followed by B, C, M, and X, which is the largest.
  • Each letter stands for a 10-fold increase in energy output. An X is therefore 10 times M and 100 times C.
  • There is a finer scale from 1 to 9 inside each letter class.

what are solar flares?

  • Massive explosions on the sun known as solar flares release energy, light, and fast-moving particles into space.
  • Coronal mass ejections (CMEs), which are solar magnetic storms, are frequently linked to these flares.
  •  It takes place when abrupt energy released from magnetic fields that have been "twisted" (often above sunspots).
