Bhuvan Panchayat Geoportal 4.0 and National Database for Emergency Management (NDEM) 5.0

On June 28th, in New Delhi, the Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology will unveil two Geoportals: Bhuvan Panchayat (Ver. 4.0) and National Database for Emergency Management (NDEM Ver. 5.0).

About Bhuvan Panchayat Geoportal 4.0:

  1. Purpose: Bhuvan Panchayat is an online platform that provides geospatial data and services to support the integration and utilization of space-based information in governance and research initiatives involving spatial planning, particularly at the Gram Panchayat level.
  2. Developer: This WebGIS platform was developed by the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
  3. Capabilities: Bhuvan Panchayat enables users to visualize, analyze, and share web map service (WMS) services of various thematic data products generated at a scale of 1:10k under the Space-based Information Support for Decentralized Planning (SISDP) project.

About the National Database for Emergency Management (NDEM) Portal:

  1. Function: NDEM provides a comprehensive, uniform, structured, and multi-scale geospatial database for the entire country. It facilitates situational assessment and effective decision-making during disasters and emergency situations.
  2. Significance: Acting as a national level geo-portal, NDEM integrates space-based information with disaster forecasting tools and services from various organizations. It addresses all natural disasters in all phases, contributing to effective Disaster Risk Reduction in India.
  3. Additional Role: NDEM will also serve as a Disaster Recovery and Data Provider node for the Integrated Control Room for Emergency Response (ICR-ER), established by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in New Delhi.

Role of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO):

ISRO, India's space agency, is responsible for scientific, engineering, and technological advancements to harness the benefits of space for the nation and humanity as a whole.

  1. Space Exploration: ISRO designs and develops launch vehicles, satellites, and spacecraft to explore outer space, including missions to the Moon and Mars.
