  1. Founded: The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences was created in 1927 to honor achievements in filmmaking.
  2. Design: Cedric Gibbons designed the Oscar statuette, featuring a knight with a sword in front of a film reel. Sculptor George Stanley made the 3D version in 1928.
  3. Material: Oscars are made of bronze, coated with 24-karat gold. They weigh 8½ pounds and stand 13½ inches tall.
  4. Nickname: The official name is the Academy Award® of Merit. The nickname “Oscar” was popularized in 1934 and officially adopted by the Academy in 1939.
  5. Changes in Material: Oscars were initially made from gold-plated solid bronze, later changed to britannia metal, and painted plaster during World War II due to metal shortages.
  6. First Ceremony: The first Oscar ceremony was on May 16, 1929, at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel.
  7. Categories: The Oscars honor achievements in up to 24 categories each year.
  8. Security: In 2000, a shipment of Oscars was stolen but recovered. Extra statuettes are now kept for backup.
